Yuchengco: Maria Elena Yuchengco Memorial Journalism Scholarship

Established in honor of Mona Lisa Yuchengco, founding publisher and editor of Filipinas Magazine, the scholarship aims to support incoming freshman or current, full-time undergraduate at a four-year college or university pursuing careers in journalism. Applicant must be of Filipino heritage and a resident of San Francisco Bay area.

  • Essay:
    Respond to each of the short essay questions on a separate sheet of paper. Your essays should be in 12-point font and single-spaced. At the top of the page, include your name and the name of the scholarship program. After each essay, please include the word count. 1) Tell us about yourself, including your academic and career goals, hopes and dreams for the future and the role/influence of your Filipino heritage. Recommended length: 250-500 words; 2) Describe your proudest moment and the greatest challenge you have faced, either personally or academically. What did you learn from these experiences? Recommended length: 150-200 words; 3) What type of journalism most interests you and why? How did you develop this interest? Describe any extra-curricular activities, school project(s) or work experience(s) that have influenced your interest in journalism. Recommended length: 250-500 words; 4) What are your favorite news outlets, and who are your favorite journalists? What do you admire about them? Recommended length: 150-200 words; 5) Optional: Is there anything else you would like us to know, including any unusual family or personal circumstances that have affected your achievement in school, work experience or your participation in school activities?
  • Recommendation Letters:
    Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a current teacher or professor. Letters should be on official school or organization letterhead. Please include the students first and last name.
  • Portfolio/Work Samples:
    Submit a writing sample along with your application. Journalism work is preferred.
  • Other Materials:
    If chosen, finalists must submit FAFSA student aid report (together with official transcript(s) of grades and SAT/ACT score reports)
