Maria Elena Yuchengco Memorial Journalism Scholarship is provided to students with Filipino heritage. The scholarship ranges from $500 to $3,000 that will be given to an up to three awardees. The program was established in honor of Maria Elena who was a key in founding the Filipinas Magazine.

    The applicant must be an undergraduate student.
  • Minimum GPA:
    3.0
  • Financial Need:
    Required
  • Residence:
    The applicant must be a permanent resident (or U.S. Citizen). The student must also be a San Francisco Bay Area resident.
  • Citizenship:
    The scholarship must be a U.S. Citizen (or permanent resident).
  • College:
    The applicant must attend a four-year college or university.
  • Major/Career:
    The scholarship is open to students pursuing a major in Journalism.
  • Ethnicity:
    The applicant must be of Filipino heritage.

    The scholarship selection is based on academic achievement, potential to succeed, financial need and involvement in serving the Filipino community.

  • Essay:
    Please respond to each of the short essay questions below on a separate sheet of paper. Your essays should be in 12-point font and single-spaced. At the top of the page, include your name and the name of the scholarship program. After each essay, please include the word count. 1. Tell us about yourself, including your academic and career goals, hopes and dreams for the future and the role/influence of your Filipino heritage. Recommended length: 250-500 words 2. Describe your proudest moment and the greatest challenge you have faced, either personally or academically. What did you learn from these experiences? Recommended length: 150-200 words 3. What type of journalism most interests you and why? How did you develop this interest? Describe any extra-curricular activities, school project(s) or work experience(s) that have influenced your interest in journalism. Recommended length: 250-500 words 4. What are your favorite news outlets, and who are your favorite journalists? What do you admire about them? Recommended length: 150-200 words 5. Optional: Is there anything else you would like us to know, including any unusual family or personal circumstances that have affected your achievement in school, work experience or your participation in school activities?
  • Recommendation Letters:
    The applicant must submit two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a current teacher or professor. Letters should be on official school or organization letterhead. Please include the student's first and last name.
  • Portfolio/Work Samples:
    The applicant must submit a writing sample. Journalism work is preferred. With your permission, your writing sample or article may be featured in Positively Filipino, an online magazine (http://positivelyfilipino.com).
