Neil Churchill Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Neil Churchill who was a past NLHA President and a true Section 8 advocate. Neil was a developer, bond underwriter and FHA specialist. He devoted his entire career to affordable housing. This scholarship in his memory benefits college graduates, college seniors or students already enrolled in an accredited graduate program who demonstrated both merit and financial need. Applicants must be currently residing in an affordable housing.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Age/Grade Level:
    College graduate, college senior or student already enrolled in an accredited graduate program.
  • Financial Need:
    Required
  • Other Academic Requirements:
    Minimum B average. Acceptance for full or part-time programs with a minimum class schedule of 2 classes.
  • Character Traits:
    Demonstrated sound community leadership.
  • Residence:
    Legal permanent resident of the United States (or U.S. Citizen).
  • Citizenship:
    U.S. citizen (or legal permanent resident of the United States with a valid Social Security Number and verifiable proof of identity (driver's license)).
  • Extracurricular:
    Demonstrated sound community leadership through volunteer work in the community or at college/university.
  • Miscellaneous:
    Current resident of affordable housing meaning the resident family must have been income qualified to move onto the property or receiving rental assistance through a recognized Federal housing program (Section 8, Rent Supplement, Rental Assistance Payments, or Low Income Housing Tax Credit program.)

    Two (2) letters of recommendation from teacher(s) or faculty advisors in sealed and signed envelopes.
  • Other Materials:
    A completed online application form;Letter from a non-relative confirming their participation as a volunteer either within the community or at the college/university;Letter from the owner or property manager (on company letterhead) providing the name of the property and confirming the applicants residence in a federally assisted housing unit (e.g. project-based Section 8, RAP, Rent Supplement or LIHTC) or for Section 8 voucher recipients a letter from the public housing agency (on agency letterhead) confirming current participation in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.;Proof of citizenship or legal status.
