The scholarship is designed to reach out to the next generation of scientists and engineers by providing financial assistance to students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) degrees. The scholarship provides a one-time $10,000 scholarship awarded the freshman year of college and an opportunity to apply for summer employment, which provides valuable technical work experience and continued tuition assistance.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Age/Grade Level:
    Must be a high school senior anticipating successful graduation in the current year
  • Minimum GPA:
    3.0
  • Financial Need:
    Required
  • Citizenship:
    Must be a US Citizen
  • College:
    Must attend an ABET accredited, minority serving four-year college/university as a full-time student
  • Major/Career:
    Must pursue a Navy-relevant Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) degree
  • Ethnicity:
    Must be an enrolled member of a federally or state recognized American Indian Tribe; Alaskan Native Village or be Native Hawaiian
  • Organization:
    Must be a current member of American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES)
  • Miscellaneous:
    Applicant must not have been charged, arrested, prosecuted and/or convicted of an offense that would prevent the recipient from obtaining an interim security clearance at NAVSEA and/or SSP
  • Other Benefits:
    The scholarship consists of two parts: a one-time $10,000 scholarship awarded the freshman year of college and an opportunity to apply for summer employment, which provides valuable technical work experience and continued tuition assistance.

  • Judging Criteria:
    Applications are scored based upon factors such as academic performance (GPA and academic record), the students personal essay (demonstrates character, commitment, goals), strength of recommendation letters, and other activities the student has undertaken including jobs, volunteer efforts, internships, extra-curricular activities, hobbies, etc.

  • Essay:
    Submit an essay up to 1,500 words. The essay is evaluated by reviewers and it is expected to address educational and/or career goals, decision for undertaking their area of study, interest in and motivation to continue higher education, demonstrate an understanding of the importance of college and the students commitment to complete the educational program undertaken, and demonstrate the students plan and/or desire to make a difference in or impact their community
  • Recommendation Letters:
    Must submit TWO (2) letters of recommendation. One letter from an individual familiar with your academic success (teacher, advisor, professor). The second letter may be submitted by a non-relative who is familiar with your academic and other achievements
  • Other Materials:
    Submit financial analysis provided by financial aid office; Applicants may also provide a copy of their Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood or Certificate of Degree of Alaska Native Blood (CDIB) card demonstrating at least 25% Native blood quantum; Submit a Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB) or proof of tribal enrollment. Native Hawaiians may submit a copy of their birth certificate showing descendancy
