The scholarship is sponsored by Daybreak Game Company, an American video game developer and publisher. The scholarship is open to any individual who is 18 years of age or older at the time of entry and a legal resident of the United States. Applicant must be currently enrolled at an accredited school in an undergraduate or graduate program related to video games, including programs related to video game art, design, animation, production, programming or visual effects.

Eligibility Requirements

- Major/Career:Currently enrolled at program related to video games, including programs related to video game art, design, animation, production, programming or visual effects

- Other Benefits:In addition to the cash prize, the winner will also be given the opportunity to be hired as a paid intern for up to eight weeks at Daybreak Games headquarters in San Diego for hands-on experience working in the art department for award-winning franchises, including H1Z1 and EverQuest.
Application Details
- Judging Criteria:The panel of judges will use the following criteria to determine the winner in the art and design category: the panel of judges will use a 0-100 point scale, with 0-25 points for originality, 0-25 points for visual polish, 0-25 points for essay cohesiveness and 0-25 points for essay responsiveness and themes. The finalists will be evaluated on the following criteria, weighted evenly: (i) academic performance; and (ii) demonstrated leadership and participation in community activities and work experience (if any).

- Essay:A five hundred (500) word essay about why you want to work in the video game industry and how your unique perspective and imagination will contribute to the future of gaming.
- Other Materials:Concept Art or 3D Art Submit two (2) pieces of original concept art inspired by one of the following Daybreak games: EverQuest®, EverQuest®II, PlanetSide 2®, H1Z1®: Just Survive™, H1Z1®: King of the Kill™, and/or Landmark™. Base both art pieces on your chosen game. Each piece of concept art must not exceed 2560 pixels in its longest dimension, saved as a high quality .jpeg, and the pieces together should collectively communicate the theme and style of the game that you selected. 3D art should be delivered as a render not exceeding 2560 pixels in its longest dimension, saved as a high quality .jpeg. Do NOT send 3D source files, but be prepared to submit source files if requested. If you select PlanetSide 2, research the game by visiting the website www.PlanetSide2.com. One (1) piece must depict your own original PlanetSide 2 vehicle from one of the three (3) factions (Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, or Vanu Sovereignty). The vehicle should be ¾ view color. One (1) piece must depict your own original PlanetSide 2 character with a weapon from one of the three (3) factions (Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, or Vanu Sovereignty). The work should be in color. The character you create should be from the same faction as the vehicle and should be depicted in an interesting pose. If you select a game from the EverQuest franchise (EverQuest or EverQuest II), research it by visiting the appropriate website: www.EverQuest.com or www.EverQuest2.com. One (1) piece must depict your own original EverQuest game environment. Your color concept should fit stylistically with the game, and communicate in a single image what it might be like to adventure in this environment. One (1) piece must depict your own original EverQuest character. The work should be in color. The character you create should relate to your game environment, closely follow the art style, and should have compelling qualities in animation and clothing. In addition, please submit a 3D rendering that demonstrates your proficiency with 3D modeling and texturing. If you select a game in the H1Z1® Franchise (H1Z1: Just Survive or H1Z1: King of the Kill), research it by visiting the appropriate website: www.h1z1.com/just-survive or www.h1z1.com/king-of-the-kill. One (1) piece must depict your own original crate theme with a set of items to be worn by an H1Z1 player character. The work should include an original crate design with logo and depict all the crate items rendered (2D or 3D) in color. One (1) piece must depict an in-game environment featuring a point-of-interest. Your color concept should fit stylistically with the game, and communicate in a single image what it might be like to fight and survive in this environment. If you select Landmark, research the game by visiting the website www.LandmarktheGame.com. One (1) piece must depict your own original Landmark environment. Your color concept should fit stylistically with the game, and communicate in a single image what it might be like for players to create their own work on their build sites. One (1) piece must depict your original Landmark character. The work should be in color. The character you create should relate to your game environment, closely follow the art style, and should have compelling qualities in animation and clothing.
